Mercy Rule for AA, A and B Divisions

2011-11-14

Mercy Rule Clarification - Important reminder from our referee-in-chief

There is NO mercy rule in any AA division age classifications.

This applies to all A division age classifications:

f. MERCY RULE, if at any time during the third period the goal differential between teamsreaches six (6), the game clock will immediately go to running time, at the discretion ofthe coach of the losing team, and will not stop for any reason (excepting on-ice injuries),other than at the direction of the on-ice officials, until the game ends or the goal differential becomes less than 6. This means the clock will not stop for goals scored, penalties, icing or any other reason while the mercy rule is in effect (including time outs), unless, ordered to be stopped by the on-ice officials. If the goal differential becomes less than 6, the stop time rule as described above will be applied.

The following applies to all B division age classifications:

(note:  B teams are classified as A2 teams in SYTHL league play)

k) MERCY RULE, if at any time during a game the goal differential between teams reaches six (6), the game clock will immediately go to running time and will not stop for any reason (excepting on-ice injuries), other than at the direction of the on-ice officials, until the game ends or the goal differential becomes less than 6. This means the clock will not stop for goals scored, penalties, icing or any other reason while the mercy rule is in effect (including time outs), unless, ordered to be stopped by the on-ice officials. If the goal differential becomes less than 6, the stop time rule as described above will be applied.
